Kaolin clay from Jing De Zhen is shaped on a wheel or mold-casted. It is then fired at 1300 degrees Celsius. The surface is then painted by hand with a sharp brush, often depicting landscapes. The color depends on the pigment used, cobalt for blue, iron or copper oxide for red. Glaze is then applied to the piece, and a second firing is done at 1200 degrees Celsius. The painting job is the most time consuming part of the process, the more details, the longer it takes.
The porcelain is quite thick and feels good in the hand. You’ll see it’s translucent if you light up the inside of the cup. It makes a sharp sound when you pinch it, indicating a high clay density.
You can admire the complex landscapes and patterns hand-drawn on the cup between two sips. This will save the session if you ever find yourself stuck with the most boring ripe pu-erh in your gaiwan and are waiting for the guests to leave.
